Twenty-Two
Brooke
I wanted to get on a plane and fly home and hide in my bedroom until I figured out what the hell had happened last night.
But this was not Las Vegas, and I couldn’t hide from the incredible kisser Griffin Rockwell. Like he’d shouted after me in the club lounge, he knew where I lived. And was likely to show up unannounced.
So, instead, I’d gone to the hospital after I managed to drag myself from the bed that I’d spent the night tossing and turning in. When I had managed to fall asleep, my dreams were plagued with images of Griffin’s sexy dimple. When I’d lain there awake, I hadn’t been able to stop remembering the way it felt to have his hands touching my skin, his mouth working mine.
My lack of restful sleep had shown, and Griff had not wasted the opportunity to point out that I looked like I’d spent the night wrestling a bear. His mother had been awake, so I had missed the opportunity to point out that he was an asshole.
Jane had been in pain, but she’d been having a relatively clear day, so when the doctor came in and told Griff that she could be released to a rehab facility within the next couple of days, I felt comfortable enough leaving and heading home to Allie.
Griff had wanted to walk me out, I’m sure to corner me and assault me with his charm and fantastic lips, but I’d slipped away and not looked back.
My disappearing act hadn’t seemed to faze him much though, because he’d sent a text that simply said, “We’ll talk about this later” with a winky face.
I’d spent the short flight home trying to devise a plan that would involve continuing to raise Allie with him without ever having to talk to him again.
I still had no idea how we’d gone from the easy-going friendship we’d had for the last seven years to making out in a hotel club bar, and I knew that I needed to face it and talk to him about it, but I had to wrap my own head around it first. So, in the week that I’d been home from Florida, I’d managed to avoid talking to him during his nightly video chats with Allie.
Allie and I were watching Griff’s game. It was nearly over, the score tied at twenty-one with a minute left in the fourth quarter, and Allie was on her feet.
“Aw, come on!” She shook her fist at the TV and then turned back to face me. “Why won’t they throw Daddy the ball?”
I pressed my lips together so she couldn’t see my grin. “You should write the coach a letter.”
She glared at me and scoffed, “Mom! I already did that, remember?”
“How could I forget, Allie Bean?” I groaned.
She’d forced me to write a letter that she dictated in her still baby-ish prose and send it to Griff’s coach. I’d left out the parts where she called him a ‘big butthead’ and a ‘real mean man’ though.
